A Walk With Mitchell

May/June 2016

By Jackie Borchew

Even with rain clouds threatening to open up on our parade, the Walk with Mitchell attracted a very nice turnout and raised some much needed funds: $3,000+ to support the work of the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center. A non-profit division of the Lake County State’s Attorney’s office, this Center investigates and prosecutes hundreds of cases of child sexual and physical abuse each year. The star of Saturday’s walk was no doubt their own Mitchell, the therapy dog who comforts these abused children throughout their interviewing process and now, thanks to recent legislation, can accompany the children into court when needed. Just think about how stressful that situation is for the child victim when they must appear in the same room with their abuser. Thanks to Senator Julie Morrison and State’s Attorney Nerheim for working to let Mitchell comfort children in future situations.

The Walk with Mitchell was held Saturday, April 30 at Jaycee Memorial Park in Deerfield. The Deerfield Rotary Club was the main sponsor of the event. Close to 100 people, many with dogs, attended. Local businesses and friends helped support the cause by donating refreshments and raffle items. Sunset Foods even sent over the big popcorn truck offering popcorn free to all!
