New Residents

Welcome to Riverwoods!  The information below will help guide you as you settle into your new residence.

You may submit the required registration documents online or obtain printed copies at the Village Hall.

1. New Resident Registration: All new residents are encouraged to register with the Village, which will allow you to receive important updates and reminders regarding municipal code, seasonal maintenance, public safety, and upcoming events.

2. Setting Up Your Utilities:  refer to the Utility & Services Page for a list of service providers and their contact information.

3. Burglar Alarm Registration:  Residents and businesses with burglar/holdup alarm systems are required to register their alarm systems annually.  Ordinance 5-1F-4 of the Riverwoods Village Code applies to residential and commercial burglar/holdup alarm systems installed throughout the Village.  Initial alarm registration is $25 and renewal registration is $15.

4. Security Camera Registration: Residents can assist the police department by voluntarily registering their security cameras. Should a crime occur in your neighborhood, the police may contact you to obtain video footage.

5. Building/Remodeling/Construction Permit: In addition to major construction projects, permits are also required for projects such as: sheds/gazebos, backup generators, driveways, fences, siding, patios, decks, outdoor kitchens, window replacements, swimming pools, spas, roofs, skylights, solar panels, electrical modifications, and changes to topography when 10 or more cubic yards of fill are involved.  If you are unsure whether your project requires a permit, please contact the Building Department.

6. Tree Removal Permit:  All residents proposing to remove trees or shrubs greater than 1.5" in diameter must complete a Tree Removal Permit Application. Tree removal permits (excluding Woodland tree removal permits) are FREE of charge, but must be obtained prior to removing any trees or shrubs (dead or alive) over 1.5” in diameter.

7. Village-Sponsored Cost-Share Programs: As you plan landscaping for your new home, consider taking advantage of the Village’s cost-share programs. The first step in participation is scheduling an ecological consultation. For $75, the Village Ecologist will help determine the best plan for your unique property. Depending on your program participation, you may qualify for up to $4,000 of Village reimbursement.  To apply for an ecological consultation, click here.

8. Voter Registration:  Register online at Office of the County Clerk or in person at the Riverwoods Village Hall by appointment with the Village Clerk.

9. Notary Services: The Village provides notary services to its residents at no charge during normal office hours. Please call before coming to Village Hall to ensure the notary public is available.
