Native Plant Sale
The 2020 RRA Native Plant Sale is Canceled
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the Governor’s order to shelter in place through April 30th, the RRA Native Plant Sale for 2020 has been canceled.
For many years a group of dedicated volunteers work countless hours each winter to curate a collection of native plants appropriate for Riverwoods and work with local nurseries to procure stock, create a catalog, take orders, and distribute purchases in our community. The fruits of their efforts can be seen throughout Riverwoods in all seasons as these native plants thrive and enrich our woodlands. Please take a moment to thank our “plant ladies” for their hard work in years past and consider volunteering for next year’s plant sale.
Preserving Our Ecological Community
The Village of Riverwoods is a unique community nestled along the east side of the Des Plaines River where various natural communities including forests, woodlands, savanna, marsh, and prairie can be found developing over heavy clay soils and shallow aquifers. The natural communities are an integral part of the Village’s identity, a source of many benefits for its residents, and an essential green infrastructure link between rivers and forest preserves that provide habitat for various migrating and nesting birds, native animals, plants, fish, and insects.
These natural communities are under stress from invasive plants, Emerald Ash Borer infestations, canopy tree shading, surface water changes, and deer browsing. The Riverwoods annual native plant sale helps residents to choose new plants that are appropriate for their properties. The sale held each May assists residents to select trees, shrubs, ferns, grasses, sedges, and forbs (wildflowers) based upon light and soil moisture requirements as well as other pertinent attributes, all available on this website.
