Native Plant Spotlight | Purple Joe-Pye Weed

Native to Riverwoods, Purple Joe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum) also known as Sweet Joe-Pye Weed is a perennial that produces whitish pink to purplish pink fuzzy looking flowers in domed clusters. They are one of the tallest wild flowers found in woodland areas. The flowers provide an important food source for pollinators.

  • Ornamental Value: blooms June through October with flowers lasting for about a month. These plants work well in woodland and rain gardens.
  • Growing Conditions: light shade to partial sun in moist well drained soil is preferred. 
  • Mature Size: 2 to 7 feet tall. 

Native Tree & Shrub Planting Cost-Share Program

To help restore the ecological health of our woodlands, residents are encouraged to plant native trees, shrubs, flowers and other plant species.  You might qualify for a Native Tree & Shrub Planting cost-share program, with the Village covering half of the cost of the plants and the planting.
