Native Plant Spotlight | Blackhaw Viburnum

Native to Riverwoods, Blackhaw Viburnum (Viburnum prunifolium) is a woody shrub or small tree that can be found along woodland paths, borders and in other woodland areas. Small bees and flies are attracted to the flowers nectar and pollen. Various caterpillars feed on the flowers and/or leaves while some birds, chipmunks and tree squirrels eat the fruit produced by the shrub.

  • Ornamental Value: clusters of fragrant flat-topped white flowers bloom from mid to late spring. The flowers are replaced by a small sweet, edible, blue-black fruit. Depending on the lighting conditions the shrub can grow in irregular shapes.
  • Growing Conditions: prefers light shade to partial sun in moderately moist to dry conditions.
  • Mature Size: up to 15 feet tall.

Native Tree & Shrub Planting Cost-Share Program

To help restore the ecological health of our woodlands, residents are encouraged to plant native trees, shrubs, flowers and other plant species.  You might qualify for a Native Tree & Shrub Planting cost-share program, with the Village covering half of the cost of the plants and the planting.

Your property may qualify for one or more of the Village's Cost-Share programs, which can not only help restore the ecological health of Riverwoods, but can also improve your property's ornamental landscape and real estate value. To see which cost-share programs your property qualifies for, request an Ecological Consultation with the Village Ecologist.
