Native Plant Spotlight | Arrow-Leaved Aster

Native to Riverwoods, Arrow-Leaved Aster (Symphyotrichum sagittifolium) is a perennial wildflower that produces small lavender, light blue-violet or white petals with a center disk that starts as a cream/yellow color and later becomes reddish purple.  It can be found in woodland areas, savannas, grassy thickets and edges of yards.

  • Ornamental Value: blooms late summer into autumn for about 1-3 months. These flowers are easy to grow and are often used in naturalized areas and around borders. They attract pollinators such as bees and some butterflies. Silvery Checkerspot and Pearl Crescent caterpillars feed on the foliage.
  • Growing Conditions: partial sun in moderately moist to dry soil is preferred.
  • Mature Size: 2 to 3 1/2 feet tall.

Native Tree & Shrub Planting Cost-Share Program

To help restore the ecological health of our woodlands, residents are encouraged to plant native trees, shrubs, flowers and other plant species.  You might qualify for a Native Tree & Shrub Planting cost-share program, with the Village covering half of the cost of the plants and the planting.

Your property may qualify for one or more of the Village's Cost-Share programs, which can not only help restore the ecological health of Riverwoods, but can also improve your property's ornamental landscape and real estate value. To see which cost-share programs your property qualifies for, request an Ecological Consultation with the Village Ecologist.
