Early Arrival of Spring Brings Tick Alert to Illinois

Brown Tick

As spring arrives early in Illinois this year, so does a less-welcome guest: ticks. With the emergence of these tiny creatures comes a reminder for Riverwoods residents to take precautionary measures to safeguard themselves and their furry companions from potential tick encounters.

It's important for pet owners to diligently check their furry friends for ticks after outdoor excursions, especially in wooded areas or tall grasses where ticks commonly lurk. Additionally, you should conduct thorough tick checks on yourselves and your family members after spending time outdoors. Ticks often seek out warm, moist areas of the body, so pay extra attention to areas like behind the ears, under the arms, and around the waistline.

Illinois is one of several states where Lyme disease, a tick-borne illness, has been reported. Early detection is crucial, so it's essential to be aware of the signs and symptoms. These may include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic bullseye rash. If you suspect you or a family member may have been bitten by a tick and are experiencing these symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

In addition to conducting tick checks, residents can take preventative measures to reduce their risk of tick encounters. Wear long sleeves and pants when venturing into wooded or grassy areas, use insect repellents containing DEET, and create a tick-safe zone around your home by keeping grass trimmed and removing leaf litter and brush piles.

By staying informed and proactive, we can all enjoy the beauty of spring in our beloved Riverwoods, while minimizing the risks associated with tick exposure.
