Roof Repair Scams

Roof repair scammers are often active after a hail storm like the one we recently experienced in Riverwoods. Be leery of roofers you are not familiar with who knock on your door or call you right after a hail storm offering a free inspection. Often, these people take your money and run. In some cases, they do come back and perform substandard work that could end up costing you more money in the long run.

Here are some signs of hail repair fraud:

  • They offer an unsolicited free inspection.
  • They pressure you to make a quick decision.
  • They require full payment upfront, rather than a down payment.
  • They provide lowball bids that are too good to be true.

If you suspect hail damage on your roof:

  • Contact your insurance company first.  Your policy may cover the damage and they can assist in finding a reputable roofer.
  • Get more than one estimate.
  • Check references
  • Ask to see the roofer's proof of contractor's liability insurance. Check the expiration date.
  • Pay with a check or credit card.  Don't pay with cash if you don't know the roofer.
