Walk your Best Friend in the Orphans of the Storm Pooch Parade
August 21st will be "Dog Day" in Deerfield as the pooches come out to walk for the orphans. The two-mile charity dog walk fund-raiser to benefit Orphans of the Storm animal shelter begins at Jaycee Memorial Park on Wilmot Road. For a $20 entrance fee you and your best friend can be a part of the fun which includes raffles, refreshments and free stuff. Last year 80 dogs accompanied their people for the walk.
Your children can help the orphans even more when they print out a pledge sheet from the orphans website at www.orphansofthestorm.org. Raise $100 in pledges and you earn a limited edition Pooch Parade t-shirt and walk for free. For more information go on line or call Jackie at 847-602-8508 or the shelter at 847-945-0235.
Orphans of the Storm animal shelter takes in the stray and abandoned dogs and cats from throughout northeastern Illinois and adopts them into loving homes for a second chance in life. Please consider coming out to walk for the orphans this year. Adopt a friend for life.

North Shore Senior Center Happenings
July 20 - The Dixie Highway in Illinois - Author James R. Wright's new book has been called a "Love Letter to an Illinois Highway." His book addresses this road planned in 1914 to link Northern states such as Illinois and Michigan directly with Florida, but that today exists only in bits and pieces, snapshots and fond memories.
July 27 - Chicago - The Makin' of a Toddlin' Town. Chicago native and retired marketing executive Don Demski will offer his take on why Chicago became known as a "toddlin' town." The reasons were many and varied: entertainment, amusements, jazz, sports and a generous dollop of crime, vice and politics. As the song said, you could have the time of your life in slightly wicked, wide open Chicago.
All events are held at the Arthur C. Nielsen, Jr. Campus, 161 Northfield Rd., Northfield unless otherwise noted. Call 847- 784-6030 for information and to make reservations. or visit the website: www.nssc.org.

Cleanup Day a Success!
The Riverwoods Preservation Council (RPC) gratefully thanks the many volunteers who made the Village Roadway Cleanup Day a success. Numerous biodegradable bags of roadside garbage were collected. The RPC also thanks Al Solomon and the Village for arranging for a large dumpster to be housed on the Village Hall grounds. Prizes of woodland plants were donated by the RRA's Plant Sale Committee for the most interesting garbage collected during the cleanup. The prizes were awarded for a muddy whisky bottle/and empty condom box combination entry, and for a weathered note advising the recipient about the proper recycling of used batteries.
